Modern society wants everything fast. We have Blackberries and smart phones so that we can get our email fast. Newspapers are slowing fading from existence because they have difficulty competing with the speed of the internet. Fast food restaurants are thriving. That last point is a major concern. Namely out of convenience and a lack of time, parents are eating fast food more and more and so are their kids. The unfortunate result is that the number of diabetes cases in children rises each year and our society as a whole is more obese than ever. That is the bad news. The good news is that you can start to do something about it, and you can start today if you would like. This article will give you a couple of pointers to get you on your way to eating more healthy for you and your kids.

1. If you are short on time and must eat out, consider eating healthier foods while eating out. Any little bit can help over time. When was the last time you ate fast food and got a salad instead of a cheeseburger? While eating out, most people drink soda. If you can substitute water for soda every once in awhile or altogether, you will be making a big difference in the health of your children and yourself. Many people report having much more energy after giving up soda for a long period of time.2. Try to start more healthy foods at home. Start with fruits and vegetables. Bananas are a great resource of vitamins and kids usually like bananas. Instead of eating cereals that are high in sugar, try incorporating cereals that have less sugar. Eating more whole foods like fruits and vegetables along with fish and poultry will help lead your children to a healthy diet.

These two tips should be enough to get you started with an idea or two that you can start doing immediately. Changing your eating habits takes willpower at first but if you stick with it long enough, it will become natural to you. Understand that changes take time and take it slow. Eventually you will get there if you stick with it. You may even get to a point where unhealthy fast food is something you only eat as a last resort.

If your children consider food to be a reward for good behavior, this can turn out to be a habit for their lifetime. You need to make sure that they see food as fuel and not a treat.2) Try to keep sugar level in the diet at a minimum. Sugar not only rots teeth but can also cause your children to put on weight if they have too much of it. It can be difficult, but it is often better to give your children more of their main course than to offer cakes, snacks or desserts after their food. You can also encourage your children to eat more fruits or take in healthier snacks such as fruit bars and unsweetened yogurt.

3) Don’t give in to advertisements. Lots of children tend to eat foods that is advertised or being promoted by the TV or their friends. It won’t be easy to prevent them from craving for such demands, especially for the latest items. However, do it for your children’s long term health benefit and do think about how it can affect their behavior if you give in to what they want all the time. It is OK to buy them the things they want occasionally, but make sure that they aren’t consuming unhealthy foods all the time.4) Be a good role model. If you are expecting your children to eat all their vegetables you will need to make sure that you eat them too. Children copy the behavior of the people around them and so they will need to see you eating well too.5) Eat the “rainbow” foods. “Rainbow” foods are food that are served in a variety of different colors. Unhealthy food is fine every once in a while as long as there are good healthy foods eaten in between. So make sure to include a diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables of different colors into your children’s meals.Alert: Your child might die earlier than they should. Horrible fact, but 100% true. The Center for Disease Control has pointed out that our youngest generation is the first in decades that is facing a life expectancy shorter than yours. Obesity and weight issues have been cited as the reason why. Over the past 15 years, we have seen the obesity rate in young children double. And its more than tripled in teenagers. Physical Education is being cut in literally every part of the world and youth sports have become an ultra competitive affair that yield next to no health benefits whatsoever. We are most certainly facing a crisis. Parents don’t know what to feed their kids anymore. How can they?
